Jones spoke to the class of 2002 and their guests of hope and of responsibility --- and of taking charge of making one’s own dreams come true. "For too many years in America," he said, "we have focused on our individual rights to the neglect of our collective responsibilities. . . . We still have blanks to fill in our new sociological infrastructure, and what America is today, the world will be tomorrow. Somebody has to take responsibility, and I’ve come here to ask all of you to try. . . "In 1963 a man said, ‘I have a dream. I have a dream that is deeply imbedded in the American dream,’ and that credo established ‘dream’ as a valid force for social change and political endeavor. I believe that the whole point of education, the whole point of being here at Ithaca College, is to focus on your personal dreams. . . . "You can negotiate, because we are a people of big dreamers and high achievers and here in this place and with these dreams is where it all begins . . . and begins again every year. So let us dream, let us hope and pray, let us reinvent ourselves every morning, and let us continue restively ever after to learn and grow."
