ALUMNI AWARDS |
The
weather smiled on this year's Alumni Weekend and its attendees,
who enjoyed many traditional activities and some new events.
Among the traditional were the always-popular driving/walking tour
of downtown Ithaca led by music professor Mary Arlin '61; the Friday
morning bicycle ride; the (ninth) Butterfield Golf Tournament; treks
to the Ithaca Commons for Ithaca Festival (held every year on the
same weekend); a wine expo and beer garden; an international dinner;
the Saturday evening alumni association banquet; and, of course,
the Saturday picnic on the quad.
Among the new or different events: The Destination, a nine-piece
rhythm-and-blues band (featuring alumni relations director Graham
Stewart '81, M.S. '01, on trombone), played music of the 1950s,
'60s, and '70s in a huge tent on the Campus Center quad on Friday
night, with local fans joining alumni and friends to dance and mingle.
Los
Angeles standup comic Mike Capozzola '92 (left) headlined the first-ever
alumni comedy show, held in the pub/coffeehouse. The 1962 championship
baseball team (see photo, page 23) had a reunion, with 14 members
and Coach Carp Wood in attendance. College administrators shared
the new campus master plan at a special presentation. A colloquy
was held on the attacks of September 11, 2001. And well-known television
actor Gavin MacLeod '52 and some of his classmates discussed their
careers in a special forum on Saturday afternoon.
