CHRONICLE

9/11 Remembrances a Year Later

On Wednesday, September 11, Ithaca College choral ensembles and the orchestra, as well as other musically gifted faculty and staff members, gave a moving performance of Mozart’s Requiem in Ford Hall. The tribute to the fallen was part of the international program called "Rolling Requiem," in which musical groups from around the globe performed the piece throughout the 24-hour period starting at 8:46 a.m. local time, the moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center. (See also "Report from the School of Music.")

Vigil

A candlelight vigil was held in the evening around Muller Chapel pond, hosted by the Interfaith Council. Hundreds of students, faculty, and staff braved high winds and unseasonably cool weather to join in the memorial service and dedicate a "peace pole" (below) bearing the names of the six campus community members who were killed in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001: Vincent Abate ’83, Thomas Collins ’87, Ronald Ruben ’87, Steven Russin ’91, Derek Statkevicus ’93, and Johanna Sigmund, sister of John Sigmund ’02. Other events, including film screenings, panel discussions, and special classes, were held around campus in observance of the somber occasion.
