One
of just three Ithaca men’s lacrosse players
to have earned all-American honors three times, Derek Keenan ’87
(left; photo by Patricia Reynolds) is the program’s sixth-leading
career scorer. He recorded 2 of Ithaca’s
10 highest single-season point totals before moving to the professional
ranks. As a member of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League’s Buffalo
Bandits, he helped that team garner back-to-back league titles.
He also played on Canada’s silver-medal-winning team at the 1987
world championships.
Peter Lambert ’90 helped the
men’s soccer team to
four postseason appearances, including a pair of NCAA playoff berths.
He scored 48 career points and led the Bombers to a four-year record
of 50-19-4. A three-time all-conference midfielder, Lambert earned
all-American honors in 1989. That year he also went to St. Louis
as the only Division III player selected to participate in the
Senior Bowl all-star game.
President of his senior class, Bob Sampson ’49
played baseball and basketball at Ithaca. As a high school coach
and administrator
he compiled stellar records coaching football, basketball, golf,
and track at Hackley Preparatory School in Tarrytown, New York,
and at Onondaga, Mamaroneck, and Locust Valley High Schools. Sampson
spent 25 years --- as coach and athletic director --- at the Brunswick
School in Greenwich, Connecticut, posting a football record of
140-14 with eight league champion ships. His teams also won league
titles in basketball and golf.
Bob Tallman was one of the pioneering
figures in the development of the Ithaca College crew program.
He spent seven years as head
coach of men’s crew, posting a 64-23 record. Under his direction
a boathouse was built, women’s rowing was begun, and a men’s lightweight
crew was instituted. In 1975 the men’s varsity eight concluded
an undefeated dual-meet season with a third-place finish at the
Dad Vail Regatta, considered the small-college national championship
event.
