Associate Dean of H&S Named
David García, formerly the director of instruction and
curriculum development of the General Studies Program at New York
University, was recently appointed associate dean of the School
of Humanities and Sciences, replacing Martin Berlinrood, who retired.
In addition to helping in the planning, implementation, and evaluation
of academic programs in the school, García will work closely
with departments and programs on curricular matters. He will also
administer other school committees and initiatives, such as the
honors program and interdisciplinary environmental studies program.
James Conklin, associate professor of mathematics
and computer science, had served as interim dean during the search
for a permanent
successor to Berlinrood. "I'm delighted that David is joining the
school," says H&S dean Howard Erlich. "He is a highly accomplished
faculty member and administrator who directed and was responsible
for advancing a large and successful program at NYU."
NYU's General Studies Program is a two-year
interdisciplinary initiative serving some 1,350 students in New
York City and Florence,
Italy. As director, García oversaw the recruiting, hiring,
and evaluating of approximately 42 full-time and 50 part-time faculty,
and planned and led program-wide faculty development activities.
During his tenure he directed the writing and implementation of
the program's first major curriculum revision in 20 years.
García started at New York University
in 1994 as an adjunct assistant professor. Before being appointed
director of the General
Studies Program, he served as assistant to the associate dean and
assistant director of instructional resources and faculty development.
He holds a doctorate and a master's degree in English from Cornell
University and a bachelor's degree in English from Yale University. |
