Fulbright in Africa for Theater Prof
Assistant professor of theater arts Cynthia Henderson is heading
to Cameroon for the upcoming academic year. She received a grant
from the Fulbright program to teach and direct a production of
Suzan-Lori Parks's Pulitizer Prize-winning play, Topdog/Underdog, at
the University of Yaounde 1. She will also be working with
professors at the university on an AIDS project that will take
them into Cameroon's rural villages.
"I'm extremely excited about doing this. It's an incredible opportunity
to use the art that I love to make a difference in people's lives
--- more than just an emotional difference, and hopefully a life
difference," says Henderson.
Henderson, who came to the College in fall 2000, directs productions
and teaches acting.
A member of the Actors' Equity Association, she has acted professionally in
New York and in Europe. She holds a bachelor's degree in theater from Troy
State University and an M.F.A. degree from Pennsylvania State University.
Henderson's award marks the fourth consecutive year an Ithaca
College faculty member has received a Fulbright grant. In the last
five years, four students have also won Fulbrights.
