Across the Country

Wright College journalism professor Ira Levy '85 was a founding organizer of the "9-11 New York Education Ride." Last summer he participated in a 70-day cross-country bike trip with three friends to raise money for and awareness of the Twin Towers Orphans Fund.

The zigzag route, which covered 4,486 miles, "is not very logical," Ira said in an interview published in the Seattle Times, "but I designed it this way because there was no logic to the events of September 11." When plotting the course for the trip, he wanted it to be as grueling as possible, to honor and identify with those who suffered. The group raised $54,000 and presented a check to a representative from the Twin Towers Orphans Fund at the end of the ride.
