A large number of music and music education
alumni celebrated the 90th birthday and 65th graduation anniversary
of professor emerita of music Helene Rosa Wickstrom '38, who came
from her home in Mesa, Arizona, for the event. Associate professor
of music education Verna Brummett gave a presentation on music
education today, conducting a small ensemble of ICS students in
a demonstration of the success of the teaching methods that Wickstrom
developed years ago, along with her late husband, Carl Wickstrom
'38, and late colleague Celia Slocum-Blair '38.
"Helene, Carl, and Celia established our student teaching program
for juniors at Immaculate Conception School in downtown Ithaca," says
music professor Mary Arlin '63. "In most music education programs
juniors are not out in the schools getting hands-on experience.
But in the Ithaca College School of Music program future teachers
are strengthened under our supervision before they go out in the
public schools, and so our students get well placed upon graduation.
The pedagogy developed by the Wickstroms was very strong, and our
music education program is recognized nationally, largely because
of it." |
