Stephen Hartke Is Visiting Composer
As this year's Karel Husa Visiting Professor in Composition, Stephen Hartke, a professor at the University of Southern California, is making multiple visits to campus to work with students and to oversee performances of his work. He has also been delivering a series of public lectures on composition.
Both faculty and students performed in an October concert of Hartke's music. Hartke discussed the works with the performers and attended their rehearsals.
Hartke's music draws from medieval and Renaissance music, non-Western, and popular music. He has received commissions from numerous ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Music from Angel Fire, and the Hilliard Ensemble. He recently received a grant from the Eastman School's Institute for American Music to compose a full-length opera for Glimmerglass Opera. His work has been performed worldwide by such ensembles as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Moscow State Philharmonic, and the Canadian National Art Centre Orchestra.
