War, Peace, and Memory

Deborah Buffton ’79, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin–LaCrosse, was the guest speaker in this year’s Marjorie Fortunoff Mayrock Lecture Series in History. Her talk, which she called “Peace, War, and Memory,” covered some of the ways we perceive peace and remember war, and how these perceptions and memories determine our responses in the present. Buffton is the author of many essays on women and war, the Asian-American experience, and Chinese women writers. She edited the volume Religion, War, and Peace and served for seven years as associate editor of the Journal of Peace and Conflict Studies. She is a busy guest lecturer, especially through the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Speakers Bureau.
