Campus Visitors: Alumnus Danny Green '85
Danny Green ’85 remembers one of his reporters literally running down Third Avenue with a hot document so that his website, Smoking Gun, would be first to publish it. For Green, cofounder and director of development of the respected website, daily life is just as fast.
Green visited the College in November to give a talk, “Google Isn’t Everything: How Inexperienced Investigative Journalists Rely Too Much on the Internet and Not Enough on the Telephone.” He discussed what his work has taught him and what journalists-to-be need to know. He also visited several journalism classes and met with Park scholars.
TheSmokingGun.com, started in 1997 and purchased by Court TV in 2000, features police reports, court files, and FBI dossiers and mug shots, many obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests. Green and his fellow journalists have used such documents to break stories that are later picked up by newspapers and television outlets around the world. Perhaps the Smoking Gun’s biggest story came in 2004, when the site posted the sexual harassment suit filed against the Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly by a former coworker—and got a record-high 77 million hits in a month.
Green is also an editor for CourtTV.com and has freelanced for numerous other publications.
