Professor Barbara P. Hansen announces that there are still spaces open in the Spring ’06 course “The Cancer Experience” (672-21000), which she will be teaching on Wednesdays from 3:00-5:50 p.m. The course is open to undergraduate students from any major.

"The Cancer Experience" will provide an introduction to the major types of cancer and discussions related to the impact of cancer on the individual and his/her family, friends, and caregivers.

Topics will include: basic medical terminology, types of cancer, and external and internal influences on cancer as well as treatment, adjustments and coping strategies.

There is no textbook. Instead, students will read articles of their own choosing. They will have opportunities to discuss additional topics in cancer and related issues as they read from the current literature. Each class participant will also keep a reflective journal.

In addition, there will be guest speakers who have had cancer or are a family member of someone with cancer.

If you have questions, please e-mail Barbara Hansen at bhansen@ithaca.edu or call her at 274-1798.
