Dangerous Literature: Readings from Banned Works of the 1950s and Beyond

Join English department faculty and students for an evening of readings from literary works that have been banned or challenged within the last 50 years. On Thursday, March 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Handwerker Gallery, we will celebrate free speech as well as the 50th anniversary of the School of Humanities and Sciences.

The greater Ithaca community is invited to join Ithaca College English faculty and students as they read excerpts from books, poems, and plays by a variety of authors including Allen Ginsberg, Boccaccio, J. R. R. Tolkien, J. D. Salinger, Charles Darwin, Samuel Beckett, D. H. Lawrence, and James Joyce, among others. Refreshments begin at 6:30 p.m.; readings will run from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Admission is free, but donations of new and used books for the Incarcerated Youth Literacy Program are actively welcomed. Monetary contributions to the book drive, or bulk text pick up, can be arranged by contacting Elizabeth Bleicher at ebleicher@ithaca.edu or 607-274-1531.

You can take a sneak peak at a BANNED BOOK before tonight’s readings in the Handwerker Gallery, courtesy of the Ithaca College Library. We've put most of the books on display by the stairs on the main floor.
