ITHACA COLLEGE THEATRE OPENS NEW SEASON WITH ‘ETTA JENKS’

First produced in 1988, “Etta Jenks” garnered playwright Marlane Gomard Meyer the Joseph Kesselring Award, given annually to playwrights of exceptional promise. She was also a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, awarded annually to a woman playwright who has written a work of outstanding quality.
Meyer’s drama chronicles the title character’s quest to become an actress in Los Angeles and follows Etta on her tumultuous immersion in the labyrinthine porn industry. The production examines the dilemmas posed when sex becomes an industry and the struggles women face when trying to preserve their integrity while finding a place in the workforce. This striking, intriguing, and often gritty play explores love, betrayal and the dehumanization of women as sex objects.
