This has been a heart-wrenching week for higher education as we learn of the tragic events at Northern Illinois University, which come so soon on the heels of the Louisiana Technical College shooting.

To most of us, such acts are so incomprehensible that we cannot quite grasp them. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends and all those touched by these devastating events.

Losing bright, young people who still had so much to contribute becomes a loss for all. May each of us try to understand how this happens and work to do what we can do to prevent this by understanding and recognizing when a human being is in crisis.

We grieve the loss of these young people.
