Sara Haefeli (assistant professor, School of Music) is presenting three workshops and a keynote address for the Center for Integrated Arts Education Leadership Institute at the University of Northern Colorado, June 12-15.

The purpose of the institute is to support developing arts-integrated pedagogical strategies that promote arts learning and creative and critical thinking throughout the curriculum.  The theme for the 2012 conference is "Word and Art."

Haefeli will be speaking on K-12 curriculum connections between literature and music, focusing specifically on the music embedded in the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House on the Prairie book series for elementary students.  She will also present options for middle school and high school teachers to connect literature and music through the use of environmental sound studies, technology, visual arts, sciences, and cultural studies.

For her keynote address, she will present an interactive composition created in her Ithaca College course "The American Avant Garde" which transforms the text in live Twitter feeds to sound.  The composer, graduate student Alex Yoder, was interested in the idea creating music from something inherently non-musical, such as text.
