In compliance with section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, class materials must be made available in alternate format. Alternate formats include audio versions of written documents, documents in Braille and/or enlarged print, video captioning and materials in electronic format.
Faculty should compile reading lists as early as possible since books from smaller publishing companies and those not designated as textbooks must be scanned and converted.
Please provide course packets, handouts, syllabi, and any other materials used in class to the student in the appropriate format.
Whenever possible faculty should provide the accommodation. For example, if the student needs print materials enlarged, all standard copy machines are capable of this function. Typical enlargement is 121%.
If faculty are unable to provide the requested alternate format and have elected to use Student Disability Services, it's important to follow these procedures:
*Provide the materials to the Coordinator of Adaptive Technology Services at least 3-4 business days before the materials are needed by the student.
*Provide the materials in electronic format whenever possible.
*Inform SDS of where you would like the converted materials returned to you.
If you plan to show videos or movies in class and have a student with a hearing impairment, please check to see if they have closed-caption capability. If not, more recent versions typically have this feature. If you need assistance with obtaining newer versions of videos or having videos captioned, you can contact Kelly Merritt in the library's Multimedia Services who will assist you with this process.
If you plan to show You Tube videos, please contact our office and speak with the Coordinator of Adaptive Technology who can assist you.
SDS will contact faculty regarding students in their classes who need materials in alternate format prior to the beginning of each semester.
