Professor of Music Dr. Janet Galván has had a busy and successful 2013, full of exciting guest conducting experiences and outreach.

This past February, she conducted the Massachusetts High School Mixed All-State Chorus. This was the second time that she has conducted this ensemble, which performed in Boston’s Symphony Hall to a full house, receiving two standing ovations.

In March, Galván traveled to Birmingham, AL to conduct the Alabama High School Women’s All-State Chorus. Also that month, she conducted the national OAKE (Organization of American Kodály Educators) Youth Chorus in Hartford, CT. The chorus was a highlight of the conference. Dr. Emily Mason, IC Music Education Faculty Member, was the manager of the Youth Chorus.  Dr. Mason is a board member for the national organization, OAKE.

In April, Dr. Galván traveled back to Hartford, CT to conduct the first ever NAfME (National Association for Music Education) Eastern Division High School Women’s Honor Choir.  Ithaca College Alumnus Jon Riss was the collaborative pianist for the OAKE Choir and the NAfME Chorus.

In May, Dr. Galván will conduct the New Jersey Junior High All-State Chorus for the second time.   She conducted the first junior high all state in New Jersey in the 1990’s.

Galván conducts the Ithaca College Women's Chorale, the Ithaca College Chorus, and is Artistic Director for the Ithaca Children's Choir. She has been a guest conductor and clinician in over 40 states as well as in Canada, Brazil, The United Kingdom, Austria, the Czech Republic, Spain, and Greece. In 2010, she founded the chorus UNYC, which has performed with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra (Lanfranco Marcelleti, conductor). Galván is the founder and faculty advisor of the Ithaca College ACDA Student Chapter. This chapter has won Outstanding Student Chapter at the last four national conventions of ACDA.

Excellent work Janet!
