Sustainability Café on September 16 will examine organizing for social/environmental justice and food sovereignty

The Sustainability Café on Monday, September 16th will feature Ajamu Brown ‘99 from the New York City Housing Authority presenting “Organizing on the front lines for social/environmental justice and food sovereignty in Central Brooklyn”. The Café will be held in Center for Natural Sciences Room 112 at 4:00PM, in conjunction with the Environmental Seminar. The Fall 2013 Sustainability Café/Environmental Seminar series is focused on the concept of “Citizens + Community = Healthy Environment.” 

Ajamu Brown is a former Peace Corps volunteer, seasoned community organizer and food justice activist. In 2009, Ajamu became one of 40 individuals selected to participate in the TogetherGreen Fellowship Program, a national program to support conservation projects, train environmental leaders and offer volunteer opportunities to significantly benefit the environment. Currently, Ajamu is piloting a new Environmental Health Advocates Program with the New York City Housing Authority to increase the capacity of public housing residents and improve the environmental quality and safety of their homes.

“Teachable edibles” – local, organic and/or seasonal snacks – for the Fall 2013 Sustainability Café series are being sponsored by Ithaca College Dining Services whose motto is “Sustainability – Healthy – Fresh.” Please bring your reusable mug and fill up at the nearest drinking fountain or provide your own beverage of choice.
