Have you ever had a question about race but were too scared to ask or were unsure about how to ask? How is racism recognized? How do you experience racism? How do you think racism has affected your life and the lives of others? How do you cope with the effects? Who do you believe needs to assume responsibility for eliminating racism?
Ithaca College students, staff and faculty are invited to come together in a safe environment to share feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a sustained, confidential, frank dialogue around issues of race and racism. The Diversity Awareness Committee will initiate one Student Talking Circle and one Staff/Faculty Talking Circle (co-sponsored by Human Resources) facilitated by professionals from the Multicultural Resource Center. Each Talking Circle will be made up of 20 racially and ethnically diverse people who will meet once a week for five consecutive sessions to self-reflect, share experiences, and learn from others’ perspectives and attitudes.
When? The Student Talking Circle will meet on Tuesdays, 5:30pm-7:30pm, Feb 4, 2014-Mar 4, 2014
The Staff/Faculty Talking Circle will meet Wednesdays, 11:00am-1:00pm, Feb 5, 2014-Mar 5, 2014
Who? We’re looking for a good mix of people from all races, ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and creeds. DAC will select up to 20 students and 20 staff/faculty from the applicants.
How? Interested students and staff/faculty will be able to complete an online application that will be available early December. An updated Intercom announcement will be sent to notify interested students, staff, and faculty that the application is active.
Questions: Please direct questions to Kerry Spitze (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Michelle Rios-Dominguez (email@example.com). For more information on the Talking Circles, please visit the Multicultural Resource Center's website: multicultural-resource.org/
