Many cases of flu are being reported around the country, including here in Ithaca, and Ithaca College is taking preventive measures to manage further outbreaks. We need your help! In order to protect yourself and those around you:
Influenza Symptoms: High fever lasting 3 to 4 days, severe body aches, headache, significant fatigue, chest discomfort with cough, chills, sore throat, and decreased appetite.
Vaccine: Vaccination is an important way to protect against the flu. The Hammond Health Center still has vaccine available (free to Ithaca College students & benefit-eligible faculty and staff) but the limited supply is going quickly. Watch Intercom for updates on availability of the vaccine and scheduled flu vaccine clinics.
Prevention: Reduce your chance of getting sick by washing your hands frequently with soap and water (or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers). Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Cover your mouth and nose during coughs and sneezes. Clean shared surfaces with disinfectant. Don’t share cups, eating utensils, or lip balms. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Get appropriate sleep to help keep your immune system healthy.
Treatment: Most people who get the flu will experience manageable symptoms. They can best help themselves and protect others by staying home, increasing their fluid intake, and getting rest. If needed, the Hammond Health Center has thermometers, throat lozenges, and non-prescription medications for sale. If you have an underlying medical condition (ie. Asthma, Diabetes, Immune suppression, a heart condition, or pregnancy) or severe or worsening symptoms, please seek medical care.
