The Park Center for Independent Media wants to remind you that today's the day of award-winning journalist Juan González's visit. Tonight, at 7:30 p.m. in Emerson Suites, he will present “The Epic Story of Race and U.S. Media." The event is free and open to all.

González is the coauthor of “News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media,” a groundbreaking study that illustrates how racism influenced and was influenced by mainstream media throughout U.S. history. This often prompted enterprising journalists to start up independent media outlets that challenged official narratives. Bill Moyers calls the book an “engrossing story of how the press sees — and doesn’t see — who we are as a people.”

In addition to cohosting the daily television/radio news program “Democracy Now!” González is a columnist for the New York Daily News. His other books include “Fallout: The Environmental Consequences of the World Trade Center Collapse” and “Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America,” which was been turned into a documentary film that was shown on campus on Feb. 12.

A two-time winner of the George Polk Award for investigative journalism, González is past president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights. He was named by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of America’s most influential Hispanics and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hispanic Academy of Media Arts and Sciences.

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodation should contact Brandy Hawley at bhawley@ithaca.edu or 607-274-3590 as soon as possible.
