The CSPA-NYS Conference was held from October 5-9, 2013 in Rochester, NY. The Martin Luther King Scholar Program received a prestigious award, Doreen Hettich-Atkins holds a key role in the organization, and Michele Lenhart was an invited speaker.
The Martin Luther King Scholars program was recognized by CSPA-NYS as the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Social Justice Award. This award “honor[s] a New York state resident for outstanding service or significant contributions to social justice. Recipients of this award must have contributed significantly to or provided outstanding service to the state in general, and the higher education community in particular, through their commitment to social justice.” In an exception to the criteria as written, this award was given to the program rather than to an individual citizen as recognition of the outstanding work the program does in supporting and grooming students to life the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Doreen Hettich-Atkins, Senior Assistant to the Senior Associate Vice President, was recently elected as the President-Elect of this statewide organization, which is affiliated with ACPA-College Student Educators International. Doreen will begin this 3-year term as president starting November 1, 2013. This will be Doreen’s second time in this role. She finished her first 3-year term as president-elect/president/past-president in 2011.
Michele Lenhart, Director of Student Leadership and Involvement in the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs, served as a faculty member for the Mid-level Manager’s pre-conference. Michele spoke to the group about “Managing and Supervising a Whole Department”.
Two Ithaca College students attended the Next-Gen pre-conference event that is designed to introduce interested undergraduates to careers in Student Affairs. Four additional staff members from the Office of State Grants, Residential Life, and OSEMA attended the full conference.
