Washington, DC - In August, the Association of Education and Journalism in Mass Communication’s held its 101st conference in DC. Cyndy Scheibe, the founder and Executive Director of Project Look Sharp at Ithaca College, presented at the conferences only session on media literacy. The panel was expected to have a small audience, but during the session the room was filled with journalists, faculty, and graduate students from journalism and communications schools.
Scheibe gave a presentation on the importance of integrating information, news, and media literacy across the K-12 and in the college curriculum. Her main focus was to share Project Look Sharp’s curriculum driven approach by emphasizing the assignments that relate to journalism education and information literacy such as analyzing and creating news stories at different grade levels.
Towards the end of the session, Scheibe demonstrated some of the media decoding exercises with attendees. “It’s always fun to get the audience involved in doing some media literacy,” She said.
Other media literacy panelists at the conference included Renee Hobbs, Professor and Founding Director of the Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island, John McManus, former journalist and journalism professor and founder of GradeTheNews.org, and Dan Gillmor, Professor at Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and author of Mediactive and We the Media: Grassroots Journalism by the People, for the People.
