The First-Year Residential Experience (FYRE) is an educational, community experience for first-year students with goals of easing first-year student transitions, supporting academic success, and providing opportunities for meaningful interactions with peers, faculty, and staff outside the classroom. A signature of the FYRE program is its connection with the Integrative Core Curriculum themes.
First and foremost, FYRE is an opportunity for first-year students at IC to live together as a cohort. But, programmatically FYRE is much more! FYRE provides each new student with opportunities for reflection, growth, and exploration of their ICC theme to create a true living-learning environment. To accomplish this, we rely on two excellent resources for transitioning students: (1) a Resident Assistant (at a ratio of about 1:22) who serves as a peer mentor and holds, minimally, three structured points of contact with every student each year focused on transitional issues and academic goals, and (2) a Faculty Associate (at a ratio of about 1:36) who serves as a mentor, resource, and guide to exploring students’ ICC themes through creative programming and small group interactions.
This coming academic year (2014-15) FYRE will expand to include all incoming, first-year students and will house them in six residence hall clusters: (1) East Tower; (2) West Tower; (3) Hilliard, Holmes, Hood; (4) Boothroyd, Rowland, Tallcott; (5) Landon, Bogart, Clarke; and, (6) Eastman & Lyon. With the exception of two Residential Learning Communities (HOME & Honors, located in Eastman & Lyon, respectively) and two floors of Clarke that will house upper-year students, these six residence hall clusters will exclusively house the class of 2018.
Given the expansion of the FYRE program, Residential Life seeks to recruit 48 energetic, dedicated, and student–oriented Ithaca College faculty to serve as Faculty Associates for the 2014-15 academic year. The Faculty/Staff Associate role, at its core, is designed to help students explore their ICC themes in residentially based groups and achieve a set of articulated learning outcomes. To this end, it is crucial that Faculty Associates are able to creatively design learning opportunities (i.e. “Theme Programs”) for students outside of the classroom and effectively partner with Resident Assistants (and other Residential Life staff) to do so.
