A longtime administrator with an extensive background in facilities leadership and management has been named associate vice president for facilities at Ithaca College. Timothy Carey, who has served since 2007 as associate vice president for facilities services at Montclair State University, will join Ithaca College on March 24.
Carey has served in a number of capacities at Montclair State since 1986, including director of administrative operations, director of continuous quality improvement and executive assistant to the senior vice president for administration, and assistant director of the Educational Opportunity Fund. He holds a doctorate in educational policy, theory and administration from Rutgers University.
“Dr. Carey was selected from a very strong pool of candidates because we believe he will bring to Ithaca College the leadership that the department needs at this time,” said Gerald Hector, vice president for finance and administration. “His background and experience not only in managing aspects of facilities, but also with continuous quality improvement, are immediately transferable to this critical position. He is a change agent who is very organized and thinks strategically, and with the myriad of projects and transformation efforts taking place right now on campus, he will fit right in and can hit the ground running.”
His responsibilities at IC will include envisioning, developing and communicating ways in which physical space and facilities can support the implementation of the college’s IC 20/20 strategic plan. He will directly supervise the director for facilities services; director for facilities maintenance; director for grounds and transportation; and director for facilities planning, design and construction.
“In conversations with President Rochon and Vice President Hector, it has become clear to me that there are real opportunities for Ithaca College’s facilities department to become an active participant within the new IC 20/20 strategic planning framework,” said Carey. “As someone with an unwavering commitment to customer service and process improvement, this is an exciting time for me to be joining this first-rate institution, and I look forward to interacting with and serving the larger IC community.”
Carey has served as a board member and past education chair of the New Jersey Association of Physical Plant Managers and as a consultant to a number of higher education institutions on process improvement. He was selected for admission into the prestigious Management Development Program for higher education administrators at Harvard University.
He succeeds Rick Couture, who retired last fall.
