Share your experience and knowledge!
We are searching for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who would be interested in serving as a Peer Leader in an Ithaca College Seminar for the Fall of 2014. The Ithaca Seminar is a key element of the Integrative Core Curriculum and we believe having Peer Leaders in the classroom will be a terrific way to help students transition to Ithaca College!
What is a Peer Leader?
A Peer Leader is an experienced student who helps guide new students through the transition to Ithaca College.
To accomplish this, you will be matched to an ICSM 105 faculty instructor and his/her class section. Matching of Peer Leaders and faculty is done selectively on the basis of expressed wants/needs of both parties, with effort taken to accommodate content interests and ICC Theme experience. Peer Leaders create relationships with their faculty instructor as well as with the students in the class through consistent communication and interaction as well as class facilitation. Drawing from your own experience and knowledge regarding common first-year issues/concerns, you serve as a role model, resource, and mentor for students as they navigate their first semester.
What are the position’s responsibilities?
What kind of training is provided?
Training is mandatory and is provided via ICSM 300, which you will take while you engage as a Peer Leader in the classroom. In this class, you will learn about common first-year challenges and how to address those with your students. You will also learn about leadership styles and skill sets, which you will have the chance to utilize in ICSM 105. Effective communication methods are also strongly emphasized (including both non-verbal and verbal methods).
Who can apply?
Eligible Peer Leaders are full-time rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors with at least 15-credit hours a semester, and a minimum 3.0 GPA.
