"The Business of the Film Business: Challenges, Opportunities and an Unconventional Point of View," with Mark Burg ‘81
Contributed by Paul Deamer on 03/28/2014
Please join the School of Business and the Park School of Communications in welcoming IC alumnus Marg Burg for a special lecture on Thursday April 3, at 12:05 pm, in the Park Auditorium, at the Roy H. Park School of Communications. In his talk, Mark will focus on his unique experiences in the film industry.
Since graduating from the Park School of Communications in 1981, Mark has become a respected film producer. Currently he is the co-founder of the production company Twisted Pictures and the management company Evolution Entertainment. The two companies under Burg have compiled an impressive track record of hits, including the powerhouse horror franchise SAW, and the Emmy Award-nominated CBS series “Two and a Half Men,” and top-rated cable sitcom “Anger Management.”
In his 25 year career, Mark Burg has created an impressive range of films and television shows. His early producing credits include Ron Shelton’s award-winning BULL DURHAM, starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, as well as CAN’T BUY ME LOVE, starring Patrick Dempsey. Burg also served several years as President of Island Pictures, where he produced or executive produced films including TOY SOLDIERS, starring Sean Astin and Louis Gossett, Jr.; AIRHEADS, starring Adam Sandler, Brendan Fraser and Steve Buscemi; THE CURE, starring Brad Renfro; DON’T BE A MENACE …, starring Shawn and Marlon Wayans; B*A*P*S, starring Halle Berry and Bernie Mac; and THE GINGERBREAD MAN, directed by Robert Altman and starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey, Jr.
Since launching Evolution in 1998, Burg’s producing credits include the dramatic thriller JOHN Q., starring Academy Award® winners Denzel Washington and Robert Duvall. In its thirteen-year history, Evolution has grown into a mid-sized talent and literary management company, handling writers, directors and actors. The company is also active in television, with Burg serving as executive producer of “Two and a Half Men.”
In 2004, Burg produced SAW, an immediate cultural sensation and one of that year’s most profitable films; the film’s success led to a distribution deal with Lionsgate and the subsequent formation of Twisted Pictures, which focuses primarily on horror/thriller films. In 2009, Burg produced, SAW: THE FINAL CHAPTER, released in 3D, wowing audiences, opening at #1, and bringing the worldwide SAW franchise Box Office to over $800 million. That year, he also produced the comedy LOTTERY TICKET, starring Bow Wow and Ice Cube. In January 2013, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D was released, opening #1 at the box office.
Other projects recently produced by Burg: the faith-based award-winning GRACE UNPLUGGED, a story unlike any he’s been involved with before and Sundance Dramatic Competitor AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS starring Rooney Mara, Ben Foster and Casey Affleck.
