The Ithaca College Interdisciplinary Internship Coordinator’s Committee (I2C2) held an interdisciplinary conference for supervisors of Ithaca College students, Mindfulness Theory and Practice: Teaching Students who Struggle, on Friday June 6, 2014 at La Tourelle in Ithaca, NY.
More than 50 internship supervisors, clinical faculty, instructors, and center coordinators from across the region attended the conference to learn about the practice of mindfulness. Annette Willgens, PT, EdD, PCS, Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Clinical Education at Ithaca College and certified in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through the University of San Diego Medical School, taught conference participants the tenants of mindfulness, as first developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Terri Hoppenrath, PT, DPT, GCS, Assistant Professor/Director of Clinical Education Physical Therapy Department at Ithaca College led activities to promote the practice of mindfulness. Rita Daly, MS, OTR/L, Fieldwork Coordinator/Assistant Clinical Professor, Occupational Therapy Department, Julie Boles, MS, RHIA, Assistant Professor/Coordinator HSHP Pre-professional Program, and Jana Waller, MS, CCC-SLP, Clinical Instructor, Department of Speech-Language Pathology facilitated small group activities to apply mindfulness based practice in the context of students who struggle to demonstrate professional behaviors and sound critical thinking.
