Calvin Smith '08 Receives Gilman International Scholarship

Calvin Smith '08 recently returned from a semester in Barcelona, Spain with the help of a $5,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This scholarship is made possible through the Gilman Foundation, which is a branch of the U.S. Institute of International Education; in association with the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. According to its web site: "The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad ... The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of public and private institutions from all 50 states." This year, the Gilman Scholarship Program awarded 850 Scholarships of up to $5,000 each, with the average being in the amount of $4,000. While in Spain, Smith took Spanish and international marketing and business courses and interned at ACV Global, a marketing/advertising firm. Eighteen students have been inducted into the Sigma Xi honor society for 2008. Founded in 1886, Sigma Xi is the international honor society of research scientists and engineers; the Paulen A. Smith Chapter at Ithaca College was founded in 1966. The students were elected to membership because of their research achievements or potential.

This year's students have already done an amazing variety and quality of scientific research and we look forward to hearing of their future accomplishments.
