Temporary offices created at the new Boardman Place
There is a new addition to the list of buildings on campus. The completed Boardman Place will serve as a temporary solution to address office space issues.
The building, which sits near Dillingham Center and Smiddy Hall, was constructed over the summer and is approved by the Town of Ithaca to be used for the next five years. The building will house people working on the Student Information System Project, the Office of Sports Information, faculty from the School of Humanities and Sciences, and other offices not yet determined.
Gerontology Institute to hold session on vision problems
The first of three presentations from the Gerontology Institute will be offered Wednesday Sept. 8.
The seminar, “Understanding and Working with Low Vision,” will discuss macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and other causes of low vision in older adults.
Presenters Robert Hanye and Laura Henry from the Association for Vision Rehabilitation and Employment in Binghamton will offer tips and techniques for living day-to-day with poor vision.
The Oct. 6 presentation will focus on aspects of dementing disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and the Nov. 10 presentation will discuss how ethnicity and heritage shape perceptions of health and disease.

Biology professor to speak as part of seminar series
John Hopple, assistant professor of biology, will speak as part of the biology seminar series today in CNS 112 at 4:00.
The topic of “Phylogenic Investigations in the Genus Coprinus (Inky Caps): Mating, Molecules, and Morphology.”
Students are invited to meet with the speaker in small groups to ask questions relating to the presentation topic as well as questions concerning careers in the field of biology. Refreshments will be served beforehand at 3:45 p.m. in the first floor lobby.
Improve public speaking skills with IC Toastmasters group
Faculty, staff, students, alumni and retirees are invited to join the IC Toastmasters. The group’s goal is to help improve day-to-day and public speaking skills.
Toastmasters is an organization that provides an opportunity for people from all backgrounds learn to effectively speak, conduct a meeting, manage a department or business, lead, delegate and motivate.
The group meets every other Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon in the Klingenstein Lounge. To learn how the club works, join as a guest.

LGBT Resource Room to hold open house today at 4 p.m.
The Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Education, Outreach and Services is having an open house today from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The center is located on the ground floor of the Hammond Health Center.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend and meet the student volunteers of the LGBT Resource Room and learn about upcoming guest speakers and events sponsored by the center. For more information, contact coordinator Lisa Maurer at 274-7394.
Tompkins County to hold blood drive for Red Cross
The Tompkins County Chapter of the Amercian Red Cross will hold a blood drive at Cornell’s RPCC Dining Hall from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.
A second blood drive will be held Sept. 9 at the Ithaca VFW Post #961 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
