Gallery hopping
Gallery Night of Ithaca will be in full swing Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., as 10 galleries feature new exhibits. The galleries described below are included in the gallery night. Admission is free. For more information on Gallery Night of Ithaca, call 277-8670 or visit www.downtownithaca.com.

State of the Art Gallery is a non-profit gallery operated by artists in the Finger Lakes region. The gallery shows change monthly and feature a number of local and national artists. From March 4 to April 3, the gallery will host its annual photography competition, one of the gallery’s most popular shows. Entries from all over the country will be judged by a panel of artists from the gallery for a chance to win a cash prize of at least $500.

The Upstairs Gallery

Established in 1963, The Upstairs Gallery was Ithaca’s oldest commercial art gallery, but is now a non-profit organization. Its latest show began Tuesday and exhibits the work from a watercolor class taught by Mary Jo Larsen. The class has over 50 students, ranging from 50 to 80 years old. Pieces include landscapes, portraits and still lifes.

The Community School of Music and Arts

The Community School of Music and Arts is a non-profit organization that offers classes in music, dance, theater and visual arts to students of all ages. John Villani, author of “The 100 Best Small Towns in America,” calls the school, “one of the nation’s best small-town centers for the arts.” On Friday, the school will feature its latest exhibit, “Line, Light and Shadow,” a collection of black and white pencil, pen and ink, and charcoal pieces.

Spirit and Kitsch

Spirit and Kitsch is a gift store and art gallery that sells the work of local artists. Beginning Friday, the store will exhibit the first 15 pages of a graphic novel called “Buggy” by cartoonist Jim Garmhausen.

On gallery night, the Titus Gallery will debut a new show featuring the pastels of Brian Keeler. The Titus Gallery also sells antiques and fine jewelry from all over the world.

Solá Gallery

The Solá Gallery offers paintings, jewelry, handcrafts and specializes in Japanese woodblock prints. On Gallery Night, the show “Textile Arts” will feature both old and new rugs from Turkey, Russia, Peru and Persia.

The Ink Shop Printmaking Center and Olive Branch Press

The Ink Shop, a non-profit printmaking center, exhibits prints and offers workshops and tutorials to the public. The Olive Branch Press also prints handmade books. From March 4 to April 30 The Ink Shop will be hosting a show that features Washington D.C. printmakers.

Clinton House ArtSpace

The Clinton House ArtSpace is currently featuring a variety of work by local artists. The March exhibit, hosted by the Kitchen Theatre Company, is a preview of the fine art that will be available for bid in the company’s sixth annual online auction that will run from March 15 through March 30.

The Handwork Gallery

The Handwork Gallery is a cooperative gallery with over 40 members. Art for sale range from glass pieces to pottery to things for the home, including baskets, quilt and decorative mirrors. On Friday, the gallery will debut a series of ceramic mosaics by their newest artist, Bob Blakeslee.

Shangri-La Gifts exhibits and sells textiles (including scarves, shawls and ponchos), jewelry and artwork. The store usually hosts a reception for a new exhibit on the first Friday of every month. This Friday, Shangri-La Gifts will feature an exhibit of colorful surrealist work by Felice Josephine that explores the female form.
