Bombers fall in season opener
Déją vu was in the air Sunday. But the anticipation just wasn’t
enough, as the Ithaca field hockey team lost 6–0 to The College of
New Jersey.
As in the first game of the 2005 season, Ithaca College lost to
TCNJ by the same score. The game was originally scheduled to be
played on Ithaca turf at Yavits Field, but was moved to the Cortland
Sports Complex.
TCNJ bested the South Hill squad in almost every statistical
category. Junior Ashleigh Percherski notched a hat trick,
sophomore Katie Reuther finished with two goals and senior Jess
Berkowitz added the last goal during the shutout. The first goal of
the game wasn’t made until the 23rd minute, but TCNJ added five
more during the next 35 minutes.
Ithaca senior goalie Andrea Baraiola played all 70 minutes and
finished with 16 saves, while TCNJ senior goalie Erin Mitschke
needed to make only one save during the game. Unfortunately,
nothing could stop the offensive fury of the TCNJ squad. Overall,
the Blue and Gold were out-shot 33–2. The only two shots for the
South Hill squad came off the sticks of substitutes sophomore
Rachel Hillerman and freshman Aly Girasole.
Luckily for the Blue and Gold, TCNJ is one of the toughest teams
they will face this season. Combine that with the fact that the
Bombers’ play their next six games at home, and there is reason to
remain optimistic about the team’s chances this season.
The next game for the Bombers is at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at
Yavits Field against Houghton College.
