The field hockey team scored a season-high three goals in their victory over Washington and Jefferson College on Sunday.
Senior midfielder’s Bryce Meck’s two powerful liners from just inside the arc, and senior back Melanie McKaney’s tip-in shot propelled the South Hill squad to the 3–1 win.
The game remained 0–0 until the end of the first half, when Meck smashed the ball into the net for the first goal of the game. With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Washington and Jefferson answered with a goal of their own, notched by senior midfielder Laura Koch.
“It was a fumble in the cage,” senior goalie Andrea Baraiola said about the Washington and Jefferson goal.
Ithaca responded by scoring two goals in the second half, one by McKaney and one by Meck again. The defense held strong to secure the win, improving their record to 4–3.
Even better for the Bombers, they are now 3–0 in the Empire 8.
In their last five games, the Bombers have only allowed five goals. The defense has gotten much better since giving up 10 goals in the first two games of the year.
“I have more pride in my defense because I have been doing it all my life,” McKaney said. “But I don’t really care who puts the ball in the net, as long as we get it done.”
After winning four of five games at Yavits Field, the Bombers go on the road for the first time this year. The Blue and Gold will face some difficulties adjusting to new surroundings when they travel.
“We’re going to be playing on grass turf, which is a little bit of a disadvantage to us,” said Baraiola.
However, the South Hill squad has proven their tenacity at home and is prepared for anything.
“Sometimes the field can matter, but it really shouldn’t,” Meck said. “If you’re a good team you can overcome it.”
The Bombers have a tough schedule ahead, playing seven of their last 11 games on the road. If they play with like they did on Sunday, there won’t be a problem.
The next game for the field hockey team will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Cortland Stadium Complex against SUNY- Cortland.
