Junior Colleen Masterson heads the ball during Ithaca's 4–0 win over Vassar College Saturday. Masterson finished the game with one assist.
The women’s soccer team is on a roll. On Saturday, they showed no
signs of letting up.
The No. 22 Bombers (6–2–1) continued to cruise through the
middle of the season, picking up their fifth straight shut out victory
with a 4–0 win over Vassar College (3–4–0) at Carp Wood Field.
The Blue and Gold’s defense has been in lockdown mode
throughout the past five games and on Saturday only allowed four
shots that junior goalie Aimee Meacham handled.
Head Coach Mindy Quigg said the team has been playing better
team defense and communication has been the key in the back.
“If one of our backs steps up, we have a midfielder dropping to fill
in so we aren’t leaving a lot of gaps,” she said. “I think across the
board we are communicating better so we can cover ground more
effectively.”
While the defense continues its stellar play, the balanced offensive
attack used a strong second half push to pile up the goals against
Vassar.
Senior midfielder Kara Hutchinson exploded for five points,
including her first two goals of the year, to pace the offensive
attack.
“It feels good to score,” Hutchinson said. “I’m just happy that we
played 90 minutes as a team. It’s really the first game that we’ve
put it all together and we haven’t let down at all.”
The explosive Bombers attack – they’ve scored 17 goals while
giving up just 13 shots during their win streak – needed a strong
start in the second half to pull away from the scrappy Brewers team
after Ithaca only scored once in the first 45 minutes.
Sophomore striker Chelsey Feldman stepped up to the challenge,
notching her team-leading sixth goal of the year just four minutes
into the second half. Vassar’s Head Coach, Richard Miller, said the
quick goal hurt his teams’ chances.
“The first goal in the second half was kind of hard to recover from
and we started playing their game,” he said. “Ithaca is a good team.
They were focused and determined, and in the end the better team
won.”
Hutchinson notched her second goal of the game off a pass from
senior Ashley Williams. Hutchinson later added her own perfect
pass to charging junior forward Alli Mayo, who played the ball off
her knee into the back of the net to finish the scoring.
The next game for the women’s soccer team will take place at
4 p.m. Wednesday at Carp Wood Field against Empire 8 rival Elmira
College.
