Two teams found guilty of hazing
The Ithaca College men’s wrestling and men’s basketball varsity
teams have been put on probation for hazing. Some members of
those teams and of the women’s gymnastics and women’s
basketball teams have been referred for possible violations of
campus and athletics conduct codes.
The team sanctions and individual referrals are the result of
investigations by the college in response to two sets of
photographs posted on a public Web site depicting members of the
four teams engaging in possible hazing activities, said Brian
McAree, vice president of Student Affairs and Campus Life.
An investigation into the men’s wrestling and women’s gymnastics
teams determined that senior wrestlers hazed rookies at a party in
fall 2004, McAree said. Gymnasts were involved in the hazing of
the wrestlers but will not face team sanctions because they did not
subject their own members to hazing.
An investigation into the men’s and women’s basketball teams
determined that senior men’s basketball players hazed rookies at a
party in January 2005, McAree said. Women’s basketball players
attended the party but will not face team sanctions.
Referrals have been given to 15 students, nine of which are current
student-athletes and six of which are current students. The nine
include three members of each of the women’s gymnastics and
men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Ten students, four of whom are student-athletes, have been
referred for violations of the Student Conduct Code. Of the six who
are not current student-athletes, three were members of the men’s
wrestling team at the time of the hazing.
In total, nine student-athletes have been referred for other alleged
violations of the Athletic Code of Ethics.
Penalties for violating the conduct code range from a written
warning to probation, suspension or expulsion, while penalties for
violating the athletics code range from probation to loss of playing
time or suspension from a team.
McAree said an investigation of members of the men’s varsity
soccer team for possible hazing activities has begun.
