Frequently Asked Questions

class

Who can take an Ithaca seminar?
The program is open to all incoming first-year students on a space available basis.

Can I take a seminar in the spring term?
No. Seminars are only offered in the fall.

Do I have to take a seminar?
First-year students are encouraged to take an Ithaca Seminar. Because space in the seminars is limited at this time, the seminars are not required. In a few years as the seminar program expands, all new Ithaca College students will enroll, but in this second year of the program total enrollment will be limited.

If I come to a late summer orientation session, will I still be able to take an Ithaca Seminar?
Seats will be reserved in all seminar sections for all orientation sessions.

Do the seminars fulfill College requirements for graduation?
Yes. Although each school at Ithaca College has somewhat different requirements, an Ithaca seminar meets at least one requirement for every student. All seminars count towards liberal arts (LA) requirements and distribution requirements -- social science (SS), fine arts (FA), natural science (NS), and humanities (HU). Ithaca seminars also meet general education requirements in the School of Humanities and Sciences.

Can I take more than one Ithaca seminar?
No. Availability is limited, and we want to ensure that as many students as possible have an opportunity to take a seminar.

If I am taking a course with multiple sections, does it matter which section I sign up for?
No. Although each section has a different faculty member assigned to it, the topics and assignments are the same for all sections. The professor of your section will lead group discussions and is the one who is responsible for evaluating your work and assigning you a grade.

What is the “program” part of the Ithaca Seminar Program?
Each Ithaca Seminar is a part of the Ithaca Seminar Program.  Each seminar will dedicate one hour a week during which the faculty member and students will focus on topics of that will help first-year students make a successful transition to Ithaca College. In addition all seminar sections will participate in four common experiences. See the Seminar Program section for additional information.

Who can I contact to answer my questions about the Ithaca Seminars?
Associate Professor Warren Schlesinger is the academic coordinator for the Ithaca Seminar Program.  His e-mail address is warren@ithaca.edu.
