Novell
Ithaca College uses the Novell operating system to manage, store and share files on the campus servers. These servers include Memphis and Pulsar for faculty and staff, and Nova for students. The file servers are intended to be used for college business purposes. Personal data unrelated to the college should not be stored on the college's resources.
Faculty, staff and students all have Novell accounts, which are usually available for use after employee or student orientation.
The Novell user name is the same as your Netpass username and the initial password is %IC plus the last six digits of your college ID number (example %IC987654, note that "IC" must be capitalized). Users are strongly encouraged to reset this password after the first login. These passwords can be reset using the Novell client that is installed on all college-owned Windows computers or using the login dialog on Mac OS X.
Home Directory File Storage Space - the "G" Drive or the "Big Red N"
Faculty and staff have a "home directory" on a "personal" volume available on the Memphis file server. Students have file server space on the Nova file server. Faculty, staff and students may also be given access to shared files on other file servers depending on roles and responsibilities.
Faculty and staff have 1 GB and students have 100 MB of space on these servers.
Home directory storage space is a college resource and intended to be used for college-related material. Generally, faculty and staff should use the home directory to store files that are related to their role at the College and not meant to be shared with others in the department.
Shared Departmental File Storage Space
Departmental shared folders allow people to access and share information. Files related to Ithaca College business should be stored in departmental folders located on the Novell file servers not on the computer hard drive or on portable media. Academic and administrative departments have shared folders on either the Pulsar or Memphis servers. Talk with your supervisor to learn about shared departmental folders.
Departmental quotas vary based on departmental needs. Quota increase requests can be directed to the Helpdesk. In general, file server space is available to meet departmental needs.
Changes to access rights for shared departmental folders should made via a request to the Helpdesk.
Data Backup Policy
Regular data backups are done on Ithaca College systems by ITS for disaster recovery purposes only. This includes the data file system. Full backups of data files are held only for a brief period of time, typically no more than one month.
Data Recovery Practice
At times ITS receives individual requests to restore email and/or data stored on the network file storage systems. ITS will try to honor these requests but can not guarantee that it will be possible.
Individual File Recovery
- For student, faculty, and staff file restore requests, ITS will do what we can as quickly as practicable but can not guarantee the outcome.
