ePortfolio
Essentials
Evidence
There are several categories
of evidence that can be included in
an ePortfolio; these include Academic,
Co-Curricular, and
Personal types of evidence.
There are also several formats possible
for evidence of work. In general, these
formats are text, graphics or images,
audio, and video. The one requirement
for all pieces of evidence used in an
ePortfolio is that they all be accessible
over the Web.
When students are creating an ePortfolio,
it is highly recommended that they involve
both faculty and their advisors in the
creation process. Faculty can help advise
on the appropriateness of various projects
and their usefullness as evidence in
an ePortfolio, as well as offer advice
on tailoring projects specifically for
use in an ePortfolio and creating them
in a web-ready format.
A student's advisor can be an invaluable
resource in "brainstorming"
before building an ePortfolio, and in
updating a site as a student progresses
in their course of study. Advisors have
a better understanding of the potential
audience to which a student's ePortfolio
should appeal, as well as any recommendations
and/or requirements if the ePortfolio
is to be used in a certification process.
Throughout the process of gathering
and presenting evidence, it is highly
recommended that a student make both
faculty and advisors an integral part
of the process.
See the Evidence
section for more information.
Create
Go to the Ithaca College Web Profile Manager at http://www.ithaca.edu:8888/profilesdev.
The creation of a Web
site involves many steps. Not only is the collection and
preparation of evidence necessary, but
a site must be built to contain and
present the evidence in a clear and
easily used manner. The Ithaca College Web Profile Manager (IC Web Profiler) eliminates some of the creation steps, allowing the content of the porfolio to take priority.
Before constructing a site, careful
consideration should be given to the
intent of the site and its intended
audience. The content of the site is an important consideration; an ePortfolio is similar to a résumé - it shows evidence of the student's progress, abilities, and professionalism.
The IC Web Profiler is a program designed to allow students to maintain a Web site with ease. A student can add pages, files, and content that they deem necessary to their space without having knowledge of HTML or any of the tools necessary to build a Web site.
Publish
There are several options for publishing an ePortfolio using the IC Web Profiler. The first option prevents a student's ePortfolio from being viewed by anyone but the student. Once the student is comfortable with what he or she has created, they can choose who will be able to access the site. Limited access allows only those on the Ithaca College campus to view the Web site, and can even be narrowed down to choosing one or all of the groups including Faculty, Students, and Administrative Staff. If a student chooses to allow Public access, anyone in the world will be able to view the ePortfolio.
Resources
The Resources page of
this site lists several sites on ePortfolios
and material related to ePortfolios.
Please note that these sites are

as a convenience; ITS takes no responsibility
for their content.
Many Quick Guides are available through
ITS. These Guides cover basic computer
skills in a range of applications. Quick Guides are
available in the ITS Main Office, Muller
102, or at http://www.ithaca.edu/computing/quick_guides/
.
In addition to the Quick Guides, ITS
provides workshops on a variety of programs.
Workshops generally last one hour, are taught by ITS staff,
and are available to the entire campus
- faculty, staff, and students.
To see a list of available workshops,
or to sign up to attend a workshop,
