Literacy-based Intervention: More Than Wh-Questions
Client: Christine Cecconi

Christine Cecconi, Clinical Assoc. Professsor and Clinical Director of the Ewing Clinic, asks the question, "how can one best encourage at-risk pre-schooled children to interact with a storybook?" The subject of Literacy-based Intervention, also know as Dialogic Reading Techniques, addresses this very question. These reading strategies encourage young children to interact with storybooks in an active manner in an attempt to improve early literacy.

Professor Cecconi feels there is a significant learning curve for being able to effectively utilize literacy-based intervention strategies. It generally takes at least a semester of mentoring during a twice weekly practicum experience for student clinicians to become familiar and effective with these procedures.

Our plan for this project was to capture real-life demonstrations from a master teacher and clinician utilizing these prescribed procedures and techniques and present them within an online learning environment. This allows Ithaca College undergraduate and graduate Speech-Language Pathology students to listen, watch and demonstrate their understanding within rich online multimedia learning modules.

In addition, the online learning modules allow the faculty to collect student participation data, such as access logs, video matching effectiveness and test results. Furthermore, the module allows for the user to rate this online learning environment by submitting feedback. Professor Cecconi intends to present this data at future conferences.
