Speech and Pacing Training
by Doug Cross
Doug Cross, Associate Professor in the Department of
Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, is developing
multimedia animation programs to train individuals to
perceive and voluntarily shape movement fluidity and
what he calls "psychological pace" (perception
of movement speed and/or time passing). Doug has shown
that individuals can effectively shape complex speech
and nonspeech movements and modify psychological and
movement pace/rate by focusing on corresponding movement
patterns of inanimate objects depicted on a computer
monitor. Doug is developing specific animation programs
that will help people who stutter to produce more natural,
fluid speech under conditions of both real and perceived
time pressure. These programs are integrated into his
basic stuttering treatment program.
Our solution is to help Doug integrate his present
prototype "Speech and Pace Training" animations
created in Macromedia Director into more internet compatible
Macromedia Flash applications.
