Bringing Visual Ideas to
Online Courseware
by Julian Euell
Julian Euell, Associate Professor in the Department
of Sociology, felt his online students were missing
out on his visual teaching style. For example, when
Julian discussed the social impact of the meal, he came
to class dressed in a waiter’s tuxedo. Why did
he do this? Because Julian feels that by linking verbal
content to visual metaphor (waiter’s tuxedo) he
can create a right brain, left brain connection that
makes it easier for his students to organize their in-classroom
discussions, thus improving student retention. Julian
wanted to touch his online students with the same visual
effectiveness as his in-classroom students.
ISS conducted several brainstorming sessions with Julian
to explore how this could be accomplished. We designed
an online slideshow that integrated every desired visual
image. Julian now finds it possible to expand his visual
ideas just as effectively on the Web as in his classroom
lectures.
