Development of an Online
Learning Program for Physical Therapy Clinical Instructors
Client: Kathleen Buccieri
Kathleen Buccieri, Assistant Professor and Director
of Clinical Education in the department of Physical
Therapy, has developed the Clinical Instructor Development
Program (CIDP), which is an unique distance learning
program designed to develop clinical teaching skills
for physical therapists affiliated as clinical instructors
with our academic program. The innovative program includes
a clinical instructor questionnaire, online learning
modules, and mechanisms for participants to provide
feedback to the course designers. The CIDP is available
to the clinical instructors prior to student participation
in clinical education placements to identify the individual
clinical instructors and to provide the preceptor knowledge
intended to enhance effectiveness as a clinical teacher.
During this project, Doctor Buccieri designed her content
modules in PowerPoint with audio voice-over of the lectures
recorded on digital tape. The instructional design specialist
then created the technical structure of the course,
the visual environment, navigation tools and feedback
mechanisms, and managed the maintenance and modifications
of the program’s electronic, audio and visual
needs.
Participants complete modules, submitting feedback for
each module. The faculty member tracks user participation,
provides ongoing communication to participants and utilizes
feedback received for program modification.
