Claiming Our Voices
by Liz Begley
Liz Begley, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department
of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, supervises
student clinicians at the Sir Alexander Ewing Speech
and Hearing Clinic. She offers her students various
assistive technologies that can help individuals who
have communication disorders. Liz strongly believes
that it is beneficial for healthcare professionals to
see first hand exactly how these individuals use assistive
devices to communicate.
To accomplish this goal, we told the story of Gil and
Barbara Geer. We produced a six-minute video highlighting
the assistive technology used in the Sir Alexander Ewing
Speech and Hearing Clinic. The video demonstrates how
the DynaMyte device became one of the most vital restorative
aspects of Gil's recovery. The DynaMyte gave Gil the
ability to communicate again. It also helped restore
his cognitive processes through repetition, further
empowering his communicative abilities. Our video allowed
Liz to share this incredible story with graduate students
and health care professionals throughout the State of
New York during classroom lectures.
