Simulating a TV Control
Room
Client: Tom Nicholson
Tom Nicholson, Assistant Professor in the Department
of Television and Radio, met with us to discuss ways
to improve his hands-on TV Control Room Lab. Each semester,
The Park School has over one hundred and fifty students
each semester taking turns at sitting in the director's
chair for a three minute live video shoot. Tom spends
most of his time assisting individual students who sit
in separate seats and he must answer the same common
questions repeatedly: “Where is the tone button?”
“How do I create a CG title?”
Our solution was to build Tom a control room simulation
application that helped students learn basic procedural
skills. The simulation included five seats: Audio Mixer,
Assistant Director, Director, Technical Director, and
Character Generator Operator.
