Ithaca College on YouTube

Ithaca College maintains a Channel on YouTube.  Faculty & Staff interested in posting content should contact their Marketing and Communications representative. Content on YouTube is generally public and embeddable on web pages with embed capacity. While YouTube video is a good avenue for publishing short-form videos, we recommend using iTunes U to publish classroom recordings. iTunes U content can be limited to the campus community and provides a greater degree of privacy.

The Ithaca College YouTube channel can accommodate long-form video (up to 1 hour) and HD format video. We have organized content into playlists, similar to iTunes U. Playlists contain related content and can be requested for series videos where applicable. Content is fully searchable and embeddable - these features can, however, be turned off for specific clips.

The Ithaca College ITS YouTube page is another great resource for accessing training videos on various Ithaca College software and online resources like Sakai, Taskstream, and more.

Free Audio Resources for YouTube
YouTube now has an audio library that you can use, free of charges or royalties.  The music is great quality and can be accessed by logging into your YouTube account at the following link:  http://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary

Captioning for YouTube
YouTube's caption technology has advanced quite a long way in recent times. It features an automatic English captioning technology that creates captions from your video.  It often can misinterpret the words, but can be easily edited right in the video caption tools section of your YouTube account homepage.  If you have a script of your video, you can upload a text version of the script to YouTube.  YouTube will automatically time the text to the video.  It can also import some subtitle files.

Annotations for YouTube
The YouTube annotations tool allows you to create small 'pop-up' notes on your video.  You can set when they appear, for how long, and you have control over the placement, color, font, etc..  It also allows you to link to other videos, or external websites with the proper validation.

Encoding for YouTube
YouTube can accept almost any video format for upload, but for most users we have found the following settings give the best results.

  • Video Format: H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 preferred
  • Size: Original Size of the Video
  • Frame Rate: 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, or 30 are acceptable.
