Technology Renewal

Preparing for Tech Renewal

Users need to take some steps to prepare for the technology renewal process, including marking the date, backing up data from their current computer, checking the compatibility of specialty software, and getting familiar with their new operating system (if necessary). See the guide at right for detailed information.

Requesting and Accessing a Temporary ITS Backup Folder

One of the most convenient backup options is to contact the ITS Helpdesk (4-1000 or helpdesk@ithaca.edu) to request temporary space on an ITS server. We will create a temporary backup folder (200 GB capacity) that you can access by following the steps below. This temporary space can be requested for technology renewal backup, or for situations where data must be backed up prior to a hard drive replacement/re-image.

Windows

  • Go to the Start button
  • In the Search box enter \\neo\backup and press Enter
  • You will see a folder with your name and an expiration date*
  • Move any files that you wish to backup to this folder
  • Once you have your new computer, reconnect to this folder and move the backed up files back to the hard drive of your new computer

Mac

  • Go to the Go menu > Connect to Server
  • Enter smb://neo in the Server Address: field and click Connect
  • (Enter your Netpass username and password if prompted and click Connect)
  • Double-click on Backup in the “Select the volumes…” list
  • You will see a folder with your name and an expiration date*
  • Move any files that you wish to backup to this folder
  • Once you have your new computer, reconnect to this folder and move the backed up files back to the hard drive of your new computer

*An ITS staff member will contact you before deleting any data from your backup folder.
