Apple OS X
OS X (pronounced "O-S Ten") is the most recent version of the Macintosh operating system.
Mac Operating System Versions
The most current version of Mac OS X (Yosemite - 10.10) is now available. While users with eligible computers can technically upgrade their computers to Yosemite for free, ITS has not fully tested this OS for compatibility with campus systems. It is recommended that Macintosh users remain at OS X Mavericks (10.9) on their college-owned computers.
Mac OS 10.9 (Mavericks) is the latest supported version of the Mac OS. Since college-owned computers are replaced every three years as part of the Technology Renewal program, there may be multiple versions of the Mac OS across college-owned computers (currently 10.6 - 10.9). ITS reviews the compatibility of college systems and applications (Homer, Parnassus, Sakai, access to the Mentor file servers, etc.) semi-annually with these operating systems. Operating system upgrades are generally not performed in between technology renewal cycles unless required for a particular business need.
With the release of 10.9, Apple has announced that it will provide future operating system upgrades for free via the Apple App Store. While you have the ability to upgrade your version of OS X on college-owned computers, ITS recommends remaining on the current OS version supported by ITS until testing can be conducted. Because ITS receives OS upgrades from Apple at the same time they are made public to all, we will do our best to quickly test the implications of upgrading but cannot support the upgrade immediately after its launch.
