Novell

Novell NetWare is a network operating system developed by Novell, Inc. It initially provides a system that allows personal computers to connect to shared network resources like file servers and networked printers. The Novell system manages access to shared resources through authentication.

In order to use a college-owned Windows computer, users must login to the computer using their Novell account and can then access network resoucres like the file servers (Nova, Memphis and Pulsar). Mac users need to login to Novell when accessing the file servers.

  • Students use the Nova file server
  • Faculty and staff use either Memphis or Pulsar, depending on which server they've been assigned to.
  • Departments file server space is on Memphis or Pulsar
  • All users have a personal space
  • Access to departmental shared files depends of role at the college. Access to shared departmental files must be requested using the Individual Account Request form or the Department Account Request form

Files stored on the Novell fileservers are virus-protected and back-up nightly.

Accessing File Servers

  • From an on-campus Windows computer: after logging in, click on the big red “N” icon on the desktop. This shortcut will take you to you personal space. For students that is on the Nova file server.
  • From a ResNet or off-campus Windows computer: use an FTP program
  • From an on-campus or off-campus Mac computer: choose "Go" from the Apple menu, click "connect to server" and enter the appropriate server name either nova.ithaca.edu, memphis.ithaca.edu or pulsar.ithaca.edu. Enter your Novell username and password at the prompt.

Salvaging Deleted Files

ITS will not restore user data that has been deleted from the file servers. Individual users may be able to salvage deleted files by using the salvage feature in Novell.
