General Course Information


Objectives

  1. To obtain an understanding of the terminology of measurement and evaluation.
  2. To obtain knowledge of the historical development of grading and evaluation practices in the U.S.
  3. To be exposed the grading and evaluation practices in used in other countries.
  4. To be able to apply basic statistical concepts including mean, standard deviation, normal curve, standard scores, percentiles, graphs, and tables.
  5. To be able to critically evaluate the validity and reliability of traditional, alternative, and authentic assessments.
  6. To develop the knowledge and skills necessary to assign grades in an educational setting.
  7. To understand and apply techniques for formulating and implementing an evaluation strategy for grading students in an educational setting.
  8. To understand and apply research principles used in creating traditional, alternative, and authentic assessments.
  9. To understand and apply techniques and principles that should be used when creating and evaluating written examinations.
  10. To understand the components involved in program evaluation methods for both physical education and health education programs.
  11. To be able to "read" and "interpret" tables, graphs, p's, etc. in Research Articles and Test Manuals.
  12. To create and verbalize a personal "philosophy of grading".
  13. To reflect on some of the privacy issues involved in evaluation.

Equipment (You need to bring these with you to class every day)

  1. A calculator (one with statistical functions is recommended, ability to calculate a square root is essential).
  2. Two blank 3.5" computer diskettes and/or a 100 MB Zip disk
  3. An E-mail address.
  4. Two Textbooks :
    Performance Standards and Authentic Learning by Allan A. Glatthorn
    Tips for Improving Testing and Grading by J.C. Ory & K.E. Ryan.
